It’s October, and the autumn night brings a chill both eerie and comfortingly familiar. I’ve decided to celebrate the week leading up to Halloween by posting a scary book each day. To begin, here’s Anthony Browne’s The Tunnel, in which a brother and sister, thrown out of the house for misbehavior, discover a mysterious passageway leading to...well, who knows where? The plot hinges upon their decision to crawl inside, the ominous tableau of the darkly gaping tunnel mouth a visual fulcrum for the narrative. Browne mines the visit to a frightening otherworld (whether real or imagined) for the progress it affords the siblings’ emotional relationship. His images pay homage to several iconic works from the Golden Age of Illustration, including Walter Crane’s Little Red Riding Hood and Kay Nielsen’s Hansel and Gretel. #anthonybrowne #tunnel #halloween #book #books #childrensbooks #beautifulbook #beautifulbooks #beautifulbookcover #beautifulbookcovers #picturebook #picturebooks #picturebookillustration #picturebookillustrations #picturebookart #classicchildrensbooks #childrensbookillustration #childrensliterature #illustration #kidlit #kidsbooks #bookworm #booklover #booklovers #bibliophile #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagrammers #instabook #instabooks
