In honor of the beloved Eric Carle, here’s a look at his delightful story Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me. Looking out into the night, Monica becomes enamored of the moon and asks her father to retrieve it. Papa fetches a very long ladder, puts it on top of a very high mountain, and fetches the moon during its crescent phase. Delighted, Monica dances with the moon, hugs it, and throws it into the air. The moon, however, wanes until it disappears completely, only to reappear shortly thereafter, back in its proper place in the sky. With delicately simple language and his signature painted collage illustrations on large-scale fold-out pages, Carle frames Monica’s journey neither as a triumphant celebration of success nor as a cautionary tale of excess but simply as a quiet moment in a child’s experience. Desiring, obtaining, and losing—all parts of the universal human journey. In the end, Monica sees the new moon and drops calmly off to sleep. May we all find the same tranquility in our lives.
