Here is a peek at The Son of the Sun and the Daughter of the Moon, a Saami folktale retold by Holly Young Huth and Anna Vojtech. High in the sky, the sun goes about his business supplying the earth’s light and warmth. One day, he approaches Mother Moon on behalf of his son Solvake and proposes marriage between their two children, but the moon refuses. To protect her daughter from the sun’s wrath, the moon sends her down to earth in the form of a young girl to be raised by a kindly old couple. Known as Vanishia because of her uncanny ability to disappear without a trace, the girl grows into a lovely and otherworldly young woman. She eventually marries Luminias, one of the rowdy Brothers of the Northern Lights. Unfortunately, when the sun learns of their union, he murders Luminias with a flaming arrow. Enraged by Vanishia’s continued defiance, he flings her away into the sky where she lands in her mother’s waiting embrace. Huth’s straightforward language and Vojtech’s luminous watercolor paintings meld for a lush, thrilling dramatic presentation. #son #sun #daughter #moon #book #books #childrensbooks #beautifulbook #beautifulbooks #beautifulbookcover #beautifulbookcovers #picturebook #picturebooks #picturebookillustration #picturebookillustrations #picturebookart #childrensbookillustration #childrensliterature #illustration #kidlit #kidsbooks #bookworm #booklover #booklovers #bibliophile #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagrammers #instabook #instabooks
