If you’d like to immerse yourself in the world of early New England, read Island Boy, a classic work of realistic fiction by Barbara Cooney. The Tibbets family lives on a little island of the coast of Maine. Matthais, the youngest of twelve children, grows up fishing, hunting, and working on the family farm. He works aboard a merchant ship, rising from cabin boy all the way to captain. As an adult, he spends his life back home on Tibbets Island, first with his wife and daughters, and later with his youngest daughter and her son, also named Matthais. Finally, he drowns while out at sea and is buried on the island that he called home. With the charming details of her text and the pale colors of her artwork, Cooney paints a tender portrait of a simple life, happy and well-lived. #island #boy #boat #boats #family #book #books #childrensbooks #beautifulbook #beautifulbooks #beautifulbookcovers #picturebook #picturebooks #picturebookillustration #picturebookillustrations #picturebookart #childrensbookillustration #childrensliterature #illustration #kidlit #kidsbooks #bookworm #booklover #booklovers #bibliophile #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagrammers #instabook #instabooks
