Have a chuckle at The Bremen Town Musicians, retold and illustrated by Janet Stevens. A donkey, a dog, a cat, and a rooster, all unloved by their masters, decide to go away together. They plan to form a band and entertain at the town of Bremen. Their journey, however, is derailed when they come across a house of robbers. The plucky travelers clamber onto one another’s shoulders in order to peer inside; they topple forward, crash through the window (sending the hoodlums fleeing), and proceed to enjoy the food left on the table. When one brigand sneaks back in the night to surveil the hideout, he is beset by the animals in the dark. He flees in panic, and reports to his compatriots that the house is filled with vengeful monsters. With loose lines and large scrawls of color, Stevens brings a playful energy to her retelling.
