If you’re in the mood for a thrilling folktale, I highly recommend @yangsook.choi’s The Sun Girl and the Moon Boy. A woman sets out for the market, leaving her daughter and son alone at home. On her way home, she is menaced by a ravenous tiger, who soon devours her. The beast then makes his way to the mother’s house and employs disguise and trickery to fool the children into letting him in. The girl and the boy climb a tree to evade the ferocious predator, who soon claws his way up to catch them. Unable to retreat further, the young siblings grab onto a magical rope, which pulls them up into the sky, where they become the sun and the moon; their mother, already waiting for them in the heavens, turns into the stars. Choi’s gripping storyline is enhanced by her dramatic compositions, in which the characters display a stunning depth of emotion. A note for folklore enthusiasts: This story is Choi’s adaptation of a traditional Korean tale which she heard many times in her youth. #sun #girl #moon #boy #mother #tiger #sky #book #books #childrensbooks #beautifulbooks #picturebook #picturebooks #picturebookillustration #picturebookillustrations #picturebookart #childrensbookillustration #childrensliterature #illustration #kidlit #kidsbooks #bookworm #booklover #booklovers #bibliophile #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagrammers #instabook #instabooks
