Have a look with me through Charlotte Huck and Anita Lobel’s delightful Princess Furball. A king’s daughter is chagrined to learn that her hand in marriage has been promised to an ogre in exchange for fifty wagons of silver. The clever young woman insists on a few bridal gifts: a dress as golden as the sun, another as silvery as the moon, a third as glittering as the stars, and a coat made up of fur from every animal in the kingdom. To her shock, her father successfully produced these gifts. She decides that her only recourse is to run away, and one snowy night she absconds from her home. The princess is eventually taken in by the young king of a neighboring land. By day, she works in the kitchens, nicknamed “Furball” and believed by everyone to be a pauper; by night, she attends the royal ball in her shining gowns, a figure of mystery and radiance. When the besotted king finally discovers that his alluring guest and his lowly kitchen maid are one and the same, he marries her and all is well.
