Carolyn White and S. D. Schindler put their own twist on an old tale with their adaptation of Whuppity Stoorie. White’s expressive text is complemented by Schindler’s mixed-media art, rendered in watercolor, gouache, and pastels on colored mat board. A note for folklore enthusiasts: This story was first collected by Robert Chambers in his 1858 book Popular Rhymes of Scotland. White puts her own stamp on the plot by changing the baby to a young girl called Kate, naming the pig “Grumphie”, and having the mysterious green fairy travel in a whirlwind that makes the sound “Whuppity! Whuppity!”—perhaps explaining her distinctive name. #wife #mother #daughter #pig #sick #fairy #name #book #books #childrensbooks #beautifulbooks #picturebook #picturebooks #picturebookillustration #picturebookillustrations #picturebookart #childrensbookillustration #childrensliterature #illustration #kidlit #kidsbooks #bookworm #booklover #booklovers #bibliophile #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagrammers #instabook #instabooks
