For a gripping read, try The Story of Little Red Riding Hood, translated from the German of the Brothers Grimm by Maria Tatar and illustrated by Christopher Bing. All familiar details are in place: the red hooded cloak, the wolf, the path through the woods, the grandmother’s bed. Bing’s pen-and-ink drawings, painted with vibrant watercolor, powerfully convey each beat of the tale through striking angles and riveting action poses. A note for folklore enthusiasts: so closely does this retelling hew to the Grimms’ tale that it includes the little-known second chapter in which Little Red Riding Hood and her grandmother are menaced by another wolf, whom they trick into drowning in a trough of sausage water. Moreover, glued to the endpaper just before the back cover is a little booklet containing Tatar’s translation of Charles Perrault’s earlier version of Little Red Riding Hood, which lacks the Grimms’ happy ending. #littleredridinghood #redridinghood #brothersgrimm #thebrothersgrimm #book #books #childrensbooks #beautifulbook #beautifulbooks #beautifulbookcover #beautifulbookcovers #picturebook #picturebooks #picturebookillustration #picturebookillustrations #picturebookart #childrensbookillustration #childrensliterature #illustration #kidlit #kidsbooks #bookworm #booklover #booklovers #bibliophile #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagrammers #instabook #instabooks
