An idiosyncratic narrative device lies at the heart of It Was a Dark and Stormy Night by wife-and-husband team Janet and Allan Ahlberg. Young Antonio has been kidnapped by a band of rough brigands who demand he tell them a story. He obliges, but inserts the outlaws themselves into his tale, confronting them with a host of outrageous fictional hazards and indignities, including wolves, sharks, pirates, foul weather, mutiny, and—most horrifying of all—a Thingy. The bandits’ futile attempts to steer the plot in a favorable direction prove no match for the stress of Antonio's imaginary terrors and insults, which wind up completely derailing their villainous scheme. Allan Ahlberg’s writing, replete with hilarious dialogue and waggish asides, is adroitly complemented by Janet Ahlberg’s charming cartoon-style illustrations. #janetahlberg #allanahlberg #darkandstormynight #itwasadarkandstormynight #book #books #childrensbooks #beautifulbook #beautifulbooks #beautifulbookcover #beautifulbookcovers #picturebook #picturebooks #picturebookillustration #picturebookillustrations #picturebookart #childrensbookillustration #childrensliterature #illustration #kidlit #kidsbooks #bookworm #booklover #booklovers #bibliophile #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagrammers #instabook #instabooks
