Today I took a dive into McElligot’s Pool, written and illustrated by none other than the legendary Dr. Seuss. As in many of his other works, Seuss uses an inciting event as the jumping-off point to riff on a theme—but what incredible riffing it is! When a passing farmer scoffs at the idea of fishing in the eponymous body of water, young Marco begins dreaming up a long list of the fantastical fish that maybe (just maybe) could be swimming toward his hook at that very moment. And that’s all there is to it: Marco’s list forms just about the entire book.
