The everyday and the fantastical neatly intersect in Helen Ward and Wayne Anderson’s The Dragon Machine. One day, lonely young George finds dragons appearing everywhere he looks. He feels an immediate kinship with the mythical beasts: no one else seems to notice them, just as no one ever seems to notice him. He begins feeding them, but quickly finds them making disarray and mischief, for which he himself is invariably blamed. When life with his new companions proves unsustainable, George sets to work researching a suitable environment for the dragons and building a marvelous invention to guide them there.
