Here at the halfway point in my weeklong exploration of Cinderella picture books we have a collaboration between author Amy Ehrlich and illustrator Susan Jeffers. Ehrlich works from Charles Perrault’s text, retaining the detail that only the younger stepsister uses the name “Cendrillon” (“Cinderella”); she deals with the other epithet, “Culcendron” (literally “Cinder-Ass”), by applying the common bowdlerized translation “Cinderwench” (preserving the contempt but not the shocking vulgarity of the original taunt). Jeffers employs her preferred cross-hatching technique in fine-line pen, layered with rich inks and dyes, to create scenes of strong narrative detail. Notably, her striking portrait of the heroine on the book’s front cover stands out as almost hyperrealistic compared to the more stylized aesthetic of the interior art. #cinderella #glass #slipper #fairy #godmother #fairygodmother #magic #book #books #childrensbooks #beautifulbooks #picturebook #picturebooks #picturebookillustration #picturebookillustrations #picturebookart #childrensbookillustration #childrensliterature #illustration #kidlit #kidsbooks #bookworm #booklover #booklovers #bibliophile #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagrammers #instabook #instabooks
