What if you couldn’t see the sun? Looking up at a sky perpetually obscured by clouds and rain, where would you imagine light comes from? That’s just the problem that occurs to Kate, the thoughtful heroine of Uwe-Michael Gutzschhahn and Thomas Docherty’s The Lighthouse Under a Clouds. The lighthouse-keeper on an island below a sky that never clears, she theorizes that there must be a giant lighthouse above the clouds whose light filters down to earth during the day. Her friend Tom sketches the plan for a giant tower built of old boats, and together they begin construction. Though their neighbors regard their work with skepticism, the endeavor permanently transforms the community and its understanding of the natural world. Gutzschhahn creates a compelling work of lightly speculative fiction, while Docherty’s loose and energetic illustrations balance the weather phenomena with the emotional experiences of the characters. #lighthouse #clouds #sky #sun #weather #boats #tower #book #books #childrensbooks #beautifulbooks #picturebook #picturebooks #picturebookillustration #picturebookillustrations #picturebookart #childrensbookillustration #childrensliterature #illustration #kidlit #kidsbooks #bookworm #booklover #booklovers #bibliophile #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagrammers #instabook #instabooks
