The book of the day is Philippa Pearce and Wayne Anderson’s The Squirrel Wife. Jack lives a dismal existence tending pigs under the thumb of his cruel older brother. One night, a storm fells a great beech tree in the forest, trapping one of the mysterious “green people”—a race of mysterious wood-dwelling sprites feared by humans. After freeing the little man and bringing him back to his clan, Jack is rewarded with a magic ring that allows him to transform a squirrel into a human, a young woman who becomes his wife. The couple makes a happy life together until Jack’s brother wrongfully accuses him of a crime and has him imprisoned. Only Jack’s squirrel wife can release him—but at what cost? Pearce spins a compelling original tale of love, envy, and arcane magic, accompanied by Anderson’s lush and cheerful illustrations. #squirrel #wife #forest #woods #magic #book #books #childrensbooks #beautifulbooks #picturebook #picturebooks #picturebookillustration #picturebookillustrations #picturebookcover #picturebookart #classicchildrensbooks #childrensbookillustration #childrensliterature #illustration #kidlit #kidsbooks #bookworm #booklover #booklovers #bibliophile #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagrammers #instabook #instabooks
