The book of the day is The Moon Clock by Matt Faulkner. Robin, a social outcast, feigns illness in order to stay home from school. When she opens a little wooden chest in her room, out pops Kolshinsky, an eccentric cavalier with a call to adventure. He whisks her through the open chest, which serves as a portal to his realm, a city of towers and statues. Robin ingratiates herself to Kolshinsky’s army and aids them in a ferocious pillow fight against a sultan and his horde of rowdy ogres. Faulkner emulates the comic book medium (complete with panels and speech bubbles) to convey his story. He peppers his writing with quirky asides and character beats, and his illustrations (cross-hatched ink drawings over watercolor washes) heighten the exotic atmosphere of the comical caper. #moon #clock #dolls #toys #chest #horse #battle #adventure #magic #book #books #childrensbooks #picturebook #picturebooks #picturebookillustration #picturebookart #childrensbookillustration #childrensliterature #illustration #kidlit #kidsbooks #bookworm #booklover #booklovers #bibliophile #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagrammers #instabook #instabooks
