The book of the day is Snow White and Rose Red, illustrated by Roland Topor. Two sisters live with their mother in a little cottage. They love each other dearly and care for each other tenderly. For a time, they receive daily visits from a mysterious sentient bear, whom they grow to care for a great deal. Later, they begin to encounter an ill-tempered dwarf who repeatedly needs rescuing from dangerous situations but offers only insults and abuse in place of gratitude. Finally, a secret connection between the bear and the dwarf is revealed, a curse lifted, and a happy ending earned. Topor’s expressive art makes use of loose cross-hatching and deep, saturated color. A note for folklore enthusiasts: The source material for this story is the fairy tale “Snow-White and Rose-Red”, originally published by the Brothers Grimm in 1837 in the third edition of Kinder- und Hausmärchen. The Grimms themselves appear to have adapted “The Ungrateful Dwarf”, an originally tale by Caroline Stahl published in 1818. #snow #white #rose #red #bear #magic #book #books #childrensbooks #beautifulbook #beautifulbooks #beautifulbookcovers #picturebook #picturebooks #picturebookillustration #picturebookart #childrensbookillustration #childrensliterature #illustration #kidlit #kidsbooks #bookworm #booklover #booklovers #bibliophile #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagrammers #instabook #instabooks
