Arnold Lobel gives us a merry and lighthearted caper in The Bears of the Air. Ronald, Donald, Harold, and Sam are four young bears living in a cave with their grandfather, who preaches to them from a book on good bear habits, such as taking walks, napping, catching fish, and climbing trees. Unfortunately, their efforts to oblige him do not go as planned. Ronald tries to climb trees but gets splinters in his nose, Donald takes naps and has bad dreams, Harold goes for walks and freezes in the snow, and Sam goes fishing and falls in the water. They therefore teach themselves acrobatics and become a theater troupe. This unorthodox behavior at first vexes Grandfather to no end, but their successful retrieval of his glasses from the clutches of an irascible bird soon puts him in better spirits.
