More for Firebird Week Two: a delicate and dazzling version by Cherry Gilchrist and Andrei Troshkov. The theft of his apples prompts Tsar Vyslav to set his sons on a quest to recover the mysterious Firebird. The oldest son fails, the middle son fails, but the youngest son succeeds, thanks to the help of the wily Gray Wolf. Even after his older brothers betray him, Ivan is brought back from the dead and makes his triumphant return. Gilchrist’s engaging text and Troshkov’s rich, ornamental artwork serve each other well. A note for folklore enthusiasts: Gilchrist adapts the story from “Tsarevich Ivan, the Firebird, and the Gray Wolf”, a tale collected by Aleksandr Afanas’ev in Narodnye Russkie Skazki. #firebird #prince #wolf #russia #russian #book #books #childrensbooks #beautifulbook #beautifulbooks #beautifulbookcover #beautifulbookcovers #picturebook #picturebooks #picturebookillustration #picturebookart #childrensbookillustration #childrensliterature #illustration #kidlit #kidsbooks #bookworm #booklover #booklovers #bibliophile #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagrammers #instabook #instabooks
