Eerie imagery abounds in Stephen T. Johnson’s As the City Sleeps. Each page features a tableau of an urban space—some modern and well-kept, some fallen into disrepair—with a hint, a glimpse, or an unmistakable sighting of the paranormal. Here a group of monkeys climbing out of a picture frame, there an ebullient spider perched on a billboard, then an open manhole cover with a snake slithering in…or is it a tentacle reaching out? Johnson accompanies each picture with two phrases on the facing page: a title and a descriptive caption providing a morsel of enigmatic backstory. #city #sleep #book #books #childrensbooks #fairytalebook #beautifulbook #beautifulbooks #beautifulbookcover #beautifulbookcovers #picturebook #picturebooks #picturebookillustration #picturebookillustrations #picturebookart #classicchildrensbooks #childrensbookillustration #childrensliterature #illustration #kidlit #kidsbooks #bookworm #booklover #booklovers #bibliophile #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagrammers #instabook #instabooks
