A boy suddenly and mysteriously develops a strange relationship with water. Streams and rivers begin to bend to his will. Waves seem to sing to him from afar. Eventually, he gains the ability to collect and compress rainwater in a jar, where it absorbs energy from the sun that allows it to clean dirty puddles and polluted rivers. McPhail ends his pensive and eloquent story without providing an explanation for the the odd connection between the boy and the water, allowing readers to draw their own conclusions.
