A clearing, a respite, a little treat at the midpoint of this new Hansel and Gretel Week: it’s Sybille Schenker’s incredible version of the tale. Anthea Bell’s faithful translation captures the drama and pathos of the original tale by the Brothers Grimm. Schenker structures the book with intricately layered translucent pages that, so that images dissolve into view with the turn of each page. Picking up on the subtextual theory of the stepmother and witch being aligned or the same person, both characters are visually coded with identical floral-printed aprons, hooked noses, and ominous bony talons. #forest #woods #house #witch #book #books #childrensbooks #beautifulbook #beautifulbooks #beautifulbookcover #beautifulbookcovers #picturebook #picturebooks #picturebookillustration #picturebookillustrations #picturebookart #childrensbookillustration #childrensliterature #illustration #kidlit #kidsbooks #bookworm #booklover #booklovers #bibliophile #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagrammers #instabook #instabooks
