Today is the autumnal equinox: the first day of fall. With the turning of the season, I’m admiring Wild Child, an allegorical tale by Lynn Plourde and Greg Couch. Mother Earth tries to coax her daughter to bed. Wild Child, however, is not ready for sleep. She insists that she needs one last song, then one last snack, then a pair of pajamas, and finally a kiss. Her mother grants each request with an influx of autumnal imagery—leaves, apples, and gentle breezes. Finally, Wild Child closes her eyes and sleeps. However, in something of a twist ending, another of Mother Earth’s children, Winter, is awake and ready to play. Plourde unfurls her original story in rhyming quatrains, while Couch illustrates the mythical proceedings in acrylic and colored pencil on museum board. #wild #child #mother #earth #motherearth #bed #bedtime #sleep #season #seasons #nature #book #books #picturebook #picturebooks #picturebookillustration #childrensbookillustration #childrensliterature #illustration #kidlit #kidsbooks #bookworm #booklover #booklovers #bibliophile #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagrammers #instabook #instabooks
