In an endless slumber, there must surely be some measure of peace. But not so for the ill-fated heroine of @anajuan_art’s Snowhite, a darkly modern update of the Brothers Grimm tale. Lady Hawthorn pricks her finger on a hatpin, and the drop of blood on the snow drives her desire for a daughter. But, soon after the birth of little Snowhite, her mother dies. Her father, Lord Hawthorn, eventually remarries, but he too soon passes away. The new Lady Hawthorn is a vain woman who oppresses her stepdaughter and eventually banishes her. The young ingenue begins working at the “Lilly and Putt”, an inn owned by the seven Penny Brothers. In disguise, her stepmother offers her a drug that puts her into a waking trance. The tale ends with Snowhite’s captivity and assault in the home of the unscrupulous Mr. Prince—no happiness or comfort to be found. Juan’s text, rendered on each page in both Italian (translated by Antonella Lami) and English (translated by Bill Dodd), presents the uniquely modern horrors in a spare, unflinching tone. Her dramatic grayscale art accords the landscape a ghostly dread. #snow #white #snowwhite #queen #mirror #poison #apple #book #books #childrensbooks #beautifulbooks #picturebook #picturebooks #picturebookillustration #picturebookillustrations #picturebookart #childrensbookillustration #childrensliterature #illustration #kidlit #kidsbooks #bookworm #booklover #booklovers #bibliophile #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagrammers #instabook #instabooks
