Let Maurice Sendak whisk you away on a bizarre journey into lands thrilling and inscrutable. You won’t find these places on any map. You simply have to begin your excursion turned the wrong way around, as does the protagonist of the marvelous Outside Over There. Ida leads a lonely life, her father away at sea, her mother in the arbor watching endlessly for his return. Thus, the girl is tasked with watching over her baby sister. One fateful day, when she is not watching as carefully as she should be, the infant is stolen by goblins and replaced by a changeling made of dripping ice. Ida resolves to go and rescue her sister, but she makes a mistake: she climbs backwards out her window, which lands her in a strange place called Outside Over There. When she finally locates the goblins, she discovers that they have the appearance of squalling babies. Fortunately, she plays a tune on her horn that causes the little imps to dance so quickly that they churn themselves into a stream and flow away, leaving behind the true human baby. Ida picks up her sister and returns safely home. Sendak’s quiet text is by turns sinister and reassuring, while his masterful paintings take readers on an uncanny odyssey. #outside #over #there #baby #sister #ice #goblin #book #books #childrensbooks #beautifulbooks #picturebook #picturebooks #picturebookillustration #picturebookillustrations #picturebookart #childrensbookillustration #childrensliterature #illustration #kidlit #kidsbooks #bookworm #booklover #booklovers #bibliophile #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagrammers #instabook #instabooks
